Beyond the Podium: The People in Surfing

Hi all,

May was one to remember. I spent a few days up at Watergate Bay for the English Nationals Junior and Longboard contests, and while the surfing was world-class, what really stuck with me was the atmosphere — friends cheering each other on between heats, groms high-fiving after wipeouts, legends offering quiet encouragement to the next generation. It was a reminder that even in competition, surfing is built on community.

Next Gen in Full Force

The junior divisions were packed with energy, but it was the U12s who really made an impression. Brave, focused, and clearly loving every minute — they surfed with heart. Some of them are just getting started, but you can already tell: they’ve got the spark.

Familiar Faces, Still Pushing

Watching Ben Skinner and Emily Curry take wins was a highlight, not just for their surfing (which was, as ever, sharp and smooth), but for how present and grounded they were with everyone around them. These are the kinds of people who lead by example — on the waves and back on the sand.

A Quiet Win for Radical Wax

This was also the first time Radical Wax had a proper presence at an event — and I’m proud of how it felt. Just being there, talking to surfers, seeing our wax on boards, and being part of the day. Radical Wax started here in Cornwall with the idea that gear should be simple, solid, and part of the community it serves. This felt like a real step forward.

What’s Next – Para Surfing Nationals at The Wave

Next up, we’re looking forward to the Para Surfing Nationals at The Wave in Bristol. It’s a powerful event — bringing together surfers from all backgrounds and abilities, each with their own connection to the sea.

Some come to compete and push their limits. Others come for the joy of simply being in the water with mates. Whatever the reason, it’s all valid — and it’s all surfing. That’s the kind of space we’re proud to support.

So whether you’re training for your next comp, catching mellow summer waves with friends, or just paddling out to reset — we hope you’re having fun, and finding your rhythm.

See you in the water,
Kate
