From a young age, Kate Richards felt a strong pull to the sea.

Growing up on the Cornish coast, the ocean was always part of life, whether she was on a board, working as a beach lifeguard, teaching others as a surf instructor, or competing in surf lifesaving events.

Being outdoors and in the water has always been where Kate feels most at home.

That connection to the sea has taken her around the world. While travelling, she joined a marine conservation project mapping coral bleaching, a stark reminder of how rising sea temperatures are damaging fragile ecosystems.

It was experiences like this that stayed with her. Later, while working as a teacher in Thailand, Kate came across Lemongrass House, a natural spa brand committed to using only plant-based, chemical-free ingredients. Inspired by their approach, she brought the brand back to the UK in 2018.

But she knew there was still more to be done, especially in the surf industry, where so many products, including wax, are still made with harmful petrochemicals. That’s where Radical Wax began.

Created in collaboration with Lemongrass House, Radical Wax uses sustainably sourced plant waxes and a naturally ultra-tacky resin, a by-product from making beauty products, to deliver high-performance grip without harming the sea. It’s now the official wax of Team England’s junior squad.

“Radical Wax was made to offer a proper alternative to traditional surf wax,” says Kate. “It performs, it’s kind to the ocean, and we haven’t cut corners on quality.”

And the name? Kate’s also a qualified surf judge — and in competition, the top score is awarded for a truly radical manoeuvre. The name felt right.

“Our mission as surfers is to leave nothing behind,” says Kate. “That simple idea guides everything we do.”
